Wales legends Ian Rush and Simon Davies enjoy Bank Holiday Weekend Football Fun

Two Wales legends joined hundreds of excited young football lovers at McDonald’s Community Football Days in north and south Wales this Bank Holiday Weekend.

Rush was at Penycae FC, in Wrexham, for the showcase McDonald’s Community Football Day, while Simon Davies joined in the fun at Baglan B&G Club, in Port Talbot.

The duo, who amassed 131 international caps between them, spent time inspiring the youngsters in attendance and getting heavily involved in the exciting activities provided by McDonald’s.

Speaking at Satuday’s Penycae FC showcase event, 28-goal former Liverpool striker Rush emphasised the importance of the Community Football Days in developing grassroots football across the country.

He said: “To have something like this in Wales and to be able to visit clubs and see the set-ups and everything like that is fantastic, it certainly wasn’t like this when I was a youngster!”

“It is hugely important that we make these steps forward at grassroots level though, because if we don’t get it right at this stage then it won’t be right at the top of the game in Wales either.

“The most important thing for me is that the boys and girls enjoy themselves. If they don’t do that then they won’t produce their best football – of course we’re looking for better footballers, but we’ve got to get it right at the grassroots and initiatives like this are great for that.”

Former Tottenham and Everton star Davies was at Baglan on Monday and he said: “When I was growing up we had nothing like this. It’s all about enjoyment.

“If the kids enjoy coming along to their local football club they will come back.

“Then, if they’re good enough and committed enough, there is a pathway for them to improve. If we can get it right at grassroots level, Welsh football is well set for the future.”

Despite horrendous weather on Sunday, 500 young footballers from clubs across North Wales flocked to Brymbo Lodge YFC, for a mini tournament, which was held as part of their regional McDonald’s Community Fun Day.

Former FAW Volunteer of the Year Kieran Howard led the team of volunteers who organised the event, which proved to be a fantastic day for all involved, in spite of the awful weather.

He said: “To see so many people out at our event today was really great, we pride ourselves on being a community club and we’re really pleased that the community has come out to support us on a day where the weather hasn’t been too grand.

“Over the last four or five years we’ve seen a big increase in the number of players and volunteers we recruit, and I think we’ve done a good job as a club in getting our name out there, people know who Brymbo Lodge are now and days like this can hopefully help us recruit more players and volunteers.

“We probably welcomed 1,500 people throughout the day, coming down to watch the event from all over, so that’s really good. We’re showcasing the club, the Wrexham league, and Welsh football at a grassroots level, so it is a testament to everyone involved that days like this succeed really.”
