The FAW Trust is a registered charity, founded in 1996, and is responsible for the development of football in Wales, from grassroots to national level.

The Technical Director will be based at Dragon Park, Newport, on a three-year fixed-term contract, with extensive pan-Wales and international travel. The FAW Trust operate two national Football Development Centres, Dragon Park, Newport and our new £5m facility at Colliers Park, Wrexham, where The Technical Director will also operate and oversee programmes and activities. These development centres play an important part in our work to inspire and develop the next generation of players in support of the future international team success.  

ROLE BACKGROUND | CEFNDIR I SWYDD

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the Technical Director is a senior member of the FAW Trust executive team with direct line management responsibility for the:

  • Head of Coach Education
  • Head of Player Development
  • Head of Performance Analysis
  • National Talent Identification Manager

The post also has functional responsibility for the Head of Football Development, who also reports directly to the Chief Executive.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB | DIBEN Y SWYDD

Provide leadership, strategic direction and support to the respective Team Heads, to achieve objectives for:

  • Increasing participation amongst players of school age.
  • Workforce development, with a specific focus on improving standards of coaching at all levels throughout Wales.
  • Identifying, developing and preparing talented male and female players, up to and including the under 16 age group, to support future international team success.
  • Integrating performance analysis best practice to support the development of players and coaches.

  • The post holder is required to have a proven track record in developing elite young players and training and mentoring coaches.
  • He / she will be required to work across Wales and should be willing to work unsociable hours.

Critical

  • UEFA Professional Coaching Licence.
  • Experience of playing or coaching at a professional or international level.
  • An outstanding football technician with proven experience of developing elite young players.
  • Strategic planning and technical football policy development.
  • Positive role model projecting high standards.
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Proven experience of budget development and working within strict financial controls.
  • Full, clean driving licence.
  • Enhanced DBS disclosure.
  • Willing to work unsociable hours.

Essential

  • Advanced UEFA Instructor Accreditation.
  • High level coach development and mentoring skills.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory management experience.
  • High standard of written and presentation skills.
  • High level stakeholder and partnership management.
  • Appropriate IT competencies.
  • Highly effective in the areas of organisation, planning, negotiating and influencing.

Desirable

  • Excellent understanding of the governance and organisational structure of Football in Wales.
  • Commercial development skills.
  • Spoken and written Welsh.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES | PRIF GYFRIFOLDEBAU

  • Figurehead and Role Model for the FAW and FAW Trust promoting a positive and inclusive image for football in Wales.
  • Providing leadership and line management to the designated Heads of Teams.
  • Leading the strategic development and operational management of the Trust’s Coach Education, Player Development, Talent Identification and Performance Analysis programmes.
  • Overseeing the successful administration and delivery of the Coach Education pathway, with specific responsibility for the FAW / UEFA Pro Licence course.
  • Supervising and contributing to continuing professional development (CPD) training and UEFA Licence revalidation events for coaches at both a regional and national level.
  • Directing the training and competitive games programmes for the male and female Regional and National Development squads.
  • Regular dialogue with intermediate and National Team Managers on talent development player pathway alignment.
  • Providing coaching support to the male and female National Development squads.
  • Engaging with the FAW and other key partners and stakeholders to support the successful implementation of the Trust’s development activities and programmes.
  • Representing the Trust and FAW at UEFA Conferences and training programmes.
