What is the Bob Docherty Cup?

The Bob Docherty Cup is the annual home nations football tournament, contested by Wales, England, Scotland, Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and usually one guest team.

In 2018 the tournament, organised by the Schools Association Football International Board (SAFIB), will be hosted by Northern Ireland.

Wales’ first ever win, in Dublin a year ago, meant all five nations have lifted the prestigious trophy in its 16-year history.

Two years ago, Wales hosted the annual tournament, at Dragon Park, and England took the trophy home with them.

Scotland have won the trophy six times, Republic of Ireland five times, Northern Ireland and England twice and Wales once.

Wales Age Group Girls Manager Matthew Clement said: “It was a great experience for the girls who won the Bob Docherty Cup in Dublin last year.

“It’s a great introduction to tournament football, which is a vital part of their development. It’s great to see how the group bonds and grows as the tournament progresses and last year was a great example of that.

“That’s why it’s not about aiming to finish first, second or third, because it is all about progression.

“I want my team to compete and adhere to our principles in every game.

They should believe in themselves and back themselves to compete in every game because they can do it and then whatever comes as a result of that is where we’re at.”
