Ryan Giggs explains why YOU should nominate a grassroots hero for the award they deserve

By Dan Cope

Wales manager Ryan Giggs has encouraged people to get involved and nominate volunteers for the McDonald’s FAW Grassroots Awards which celebrates the unsung heroes of grassroots football.

The Manchester United legend praised the volunteers and people who are involved in grassroots football across Wales, calling them “important” and “invaluable.”

Talking about his past experiences in grassroots football, Giggs said: “It (grassroots) was my first experience of organised football as a kid, playing for my Sunday league team and the volunteers, the parents and the coaches that help out are invaluable and I’m always keen to support it.”

It's about rewarding people who bring so much joy to so many children

The awards, which include Volunteer of the Year and Grassroots Project of the Year, were praised by Giggs for allowing “people who give up their time for free” to be recognised for their efforts.

Talking about the hard work grassroots volunteers put in, Giggs said: “They enjoy it of course but it isn’t easy, sometimes they don’t have the right facilities so these awards reward people who give up their time to bring so much joy to so many children.”

The McDonald’s FAW Grassroots Awards ceremony will take place on October 13th.
