Welsh Colleges performed a spirited fight back on Friday 23rd January 2015 when they overcame a two goal deficit to beat Australia 4-2 at Cardiff Met FC in a tremendous advert for Further Education football

Wales got off to the worst possible start when a sloppy back pass from captain Nathan Williams eluded Welsh keeper Gethin Roberts and allowed Jack Fulton to tap the ball into an empty net from 6 yards after only 90 seconds.

Australia went further ahead on 28 minutes with a quick counter attacking move and when Wenzel-Halls’ cross wasn’t dealt with properly Felipe Zapata-Castro pounced to double the Socceroos’ lead.

Marc Lloyd Williams’ side got back into the game 90 seconds either side of half time, Jordan Davies’ (Coleg Cambria) free kick from the left hand side of the penalty area eluded everyone in the Australia penalty area and sailed into the top corner to give Wales a boost going in at the break.<2r>

A tactical switch at half time brought more joy for the Welsh side as Sion-Dafydd Williams (Coleg Sir Gar) netted from 6 yards to bring the scores level, this following good work from Kostya Georgievsky (Gower College) and Spencer Williams (Pembrokeshire College) down the left.

Wales took the lead on 61 minutes, when a training ground set-piece paid dividends when Adam Robins (Gower College) headed the ball over the advancing Aussie keeper from 8 yards out following great delivery into the penalty area by Corey Saunders (Gower College).

Jack Roberts (Coleg Llandrillo) marked his international debut with a goal and made sure of the Welsh victory three minutes from time when he side footed in Georgievsky’s cross from the left to cap a fine display from the Welsh team.

‘What a game and what a performance from the Welsh lads, they showed true grit and determination to get back into the game and took on board the tactical changes we made at half-time. They never gave up, which shows the strength and character of these youngsters’ said Wales manager Marc Lloyd Williams ‘Credit also goes to Australia they were a strong, athletic and physical side and played their part in a tremendous game of football, they made us work for everything, a goal either side of the half-time changed the complexity of the match and we then had the belief we would go on and win the game’.
