Cardiff Dragons Prepare To Celebrate European Capital Status 2014

2014 will be a huge year for Welsh sport as Cardiff enjoys European Capital of Sport status. An impressive line-up of events such as international cricket, the Heineken Cup Final and UEFA Super Cup will be held in the capital. Local communities are also being encouraged to stage activities to boost sports participation and give everyone the opportunity to get involved in this momentous year for Cardiff. And this summer, to celebrate the sporting inclusiveness and diversity of the city, Cardiff Dragons FC have invited football teams from throughout the continent to take part in the ECS Unity Cup.

With the support of Sport Cardiff, Sport Wales, the Welsh Football Trust and the European Gay & Lesbian Sports Federation, Wales' first and only gay-friendly football team will host four tournament events in the Men's11-a-side, Men's 6-a-side, Women's and Masters categories. The festivities will run from Thursday 12th June to Sunday 15th June with the competitions held on Friday and Saturday at Pontcanna Fields, close to the city centre. Organised events in Cardiff Bay on Thursday and Saturday evenings will allow visitors to relax and enjoy Cardiff's vibrant social life.

Alongside familiar opponents from all over the UK, the Dragons are delighted to be working alongside Cardiff-born, Scandinavian-based IGLFA referee Paul Miller in securing the participation of LGBT teams from a wide range of European nations. Accommodation at two of the city centre's best-known hotels has already been secured, as have the services of local businesses in providing refreshments, trophy sponsorship and other tournament facilities.

Cardiff Dragons—who last year celebrated their fifth anniversary—compete in the Gay Football Supporter’s Club (GFSN) National and South West Leagues, and following their first national tournament victory in September, are the proud holders of the Leicester 6-a-side Trophy. They welcome players of any sexual orientation and any ability and train regularly year-round in the Cardiff area.
