On Sunday the 21st of April, 87 candidates attended the South Wales Grassroots Coaching Conference at the University of Glamorgan Sports Park. Many candidates were revalidating their Football Leaders Award and FAW C Certificate.

The ‘Barcelona Way’ was the topic during the morning and candidates had opportunities to discuss how Barcelona play and how this is relevant to grassroots football here in Wales and what lessons we could learn from their philosophy.

Our Guest Speaker – Bert Jan Heijmans took to the floor during the afternoon and firstly presented the ‘Dutch Method’ which linked in well with the ‘Barcelona Way’ as many aspects of the way Barcelona play derives from the ‘Dutch Method”.

Then BJ delivered a practical on his ‘Magic Rectangle’ – a great tool to support coaches in planning, organizing and leading sessions, something so simplistic but effective.

Ian Hughes the Coach Development Officer for South Wales commented -“It was great to have so many candidates accessing the course and wanting to broaden their coaching knowledge. In South Wales we have seen a 12% increase in people accessing the Football Leaders Course this season and a 32% increase in candidates accessing the FAW C Certificate, so with more and more qualified grassroots coaches in the area the conference will grow.

Having BJ deliver in the afternoon was fantastic, his fresh simple ideas was very thought provoking and his Magic Rectangle gave candidates a great new tool to support their coaching”

The candidates, as students of the game, each received a free tickets to watch Wales U15s who play at Jenner Park, Barry against Switzerland and Belgium.

Some candidates commented on the conference - “The benefits of the Magic Rectangle were clear for all to see and applicable at all ages, will definitely use the knowledge gained” – Mike Woods, Marshfield JYFC

“The coaches from Maesteg Park really enjoyed it and we are looking forward to passing some of what we have learnt today onto our players and coaches” – Nigel Goodridge, Maesteg FC

“Well put together and presented, very thought provoking day, well worth the 400mile trip” – Mick Strain, Crystal Palace FC
