Cardiff Dragons FC proud recipients of South Wales Award
Cardiff Dragons FC are seen here as proud recipients of South Wales FA region Grassroots Impact Award, sponsored by McDonalds and in partnership with the FAW and Welsh Football Trust. <1r>
Although the Dragons didn’t make it through to the national finals, club members are truly grateful for the recognition they received in providing a safe and welcoming environment for the LGBT community of South Wales.
The Dragons have been established for six years now and were originally set up by a small group of gay men who wanted to play football without fear of homophobia. Since then, the club has grown from strength to strength and have 50+ male and female members from Cardiff, the Valleys, West Wales and Bristol. LGBT players have the opportunity to play either recreational or competitive football for the club at 5-a-side or 11-a-side, and travel all over the UK to fulfil fixtures. Thanks to a Sport Wales Community Chest grant last year, the club now has qualified LGBT coaches who lead twice-weekly sessions in between competitive fixtures.
This year, the club is aiming to travel away to compete in their first European tournament and are on the lookout for new LGBT players of any ability. Potential players can connect via the club website www.cardiffdragonsfc.co.uk, on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/cardiffdragonsfc or via Twitter http://twitter.com/cdfc.
