Hundreds of families celebrate Father's Day at Abergavenny Rhinos Community Football Day

The event helped generate new players and volunteers in Gwent

Hundreds of excited young footballers joined Wales international Nathan Blake at the summer’s first showcase Community Football Day at Abergavenny Rhinos FC.

The McDonald’s sponsored event, organised to celebrate the work of FAW accredited clubs in and around Abergavenny, was attended by 70 teams and more than 650 young players.

As well as playing football, the youngsters enjoyed a dedicated ‘Activation Zone’ which featured a speed shot challenge, an inflatable football pitch and a 'knee slide celebration' activity.

The fifth Community Football Day hosted by the Monmouthshire Junior League club gave attending clubs the opportunity to recruit new volunteers and players, as well as offering an opportunity to meet McDonald’s ambassador Blake, who was happy to pose for photos and share his football knowledge.

The Cardiff City, Wolves and Bolton striker, who won 29 Wales caps, said: “It was incredible to see so many kids and their families enjoying the event at Abergavenny on Father’s Day.

“It was evident that the passion for football runs deep throughout the local community. The club has done a great job at bringing a so many people together and it was fantastic to be a part of it.”

“With the enthusiasm and commitment shown by the volunteers and coaches, I’m sure we’ll find some future Welsh stars in some of these teams.”

Event Co-ordinator Emma Mansfield said: “A big thank you to the FAW Trust and McDonald’s for supporting us, it’s been absolutely fantastic.

“We have hosted teams from all over the region and a special thank you goes out to all our volunteers for helping to make this happen on such a beautiful day”.

Monmouthshire Sports Development Officer Laura James said: “This has been a great event, well organised and effectively delivered. It’s been a pleasure to be part of it”.
