Girls’ enthusiasm boosts football participation in 2013

Opportunities increased through Vauxhall Fun Football Programme

Opportunities increased through Vauxhall Fun Football Programme

<1R>Opportunities for girls in football have increased dramatically since 2011. In two years the figures have nearly doubled, testimony to the Vauxhall Fun Football Scheme in increasing and sustaining participation through good coaching. 10,167 opportunities were created in 2011 for girls which has already been surpassed in the ten months of 2013. The programme has recorded a huge rise to 17,703 participation opportunities for girls.

A contributing factor to this spike in participation has been specific investment from Vauxhall into the Girls game to continue the legacy of the European Women’s U19 Chamionships held in the summer of 2013. Shane Cartwright, whose SC Soccer Coaching organisation, took up the challenge to get more girls playing said “The Girls-Only Allowed Initiative has been a great success in the Conwy area, and the recent Women's European Championships held in Wales certainly inspired the girls”.

The Scheme figures are direct information from the 19 organisations that are accredited by the Welsh Football Trust throughout Wales. These organisations are identified within the six Area Football Associations and each Fun Football Coordinator is committed to forward monthly figures to the area Football Development Officer.

This year's figures are showing October and November as the best months for participation whereas in the previous year it was the first three months, which corresponds with the heavy snow in several parts of Wales in 2013.

The North West Wales area had by far the most participation figures with South and Central Wales areas increasing their figures by a significant percentage.

The accredited organisations within the scheme are doing excellent work. Vauxhall sponsorship is a massive bonus to all the accredited organisations and this shows the commitment of a major company giving importance to grass roots football within the principality.

Vauxhall Fun Football Coordinator Meirion Appleton added “I am pleased that the Vauxhall Fun Football Scheme is able to demonstrate the huge contribution made by organisations delivering activity outside traditional structures. This allows the Welsh Football Trust to demonstrate fully the true impact football is having within the grassroots game within Wales today.”
