Welsh Futsal Player Rico Zulkarnain visits Brazil as part of volunteering scheme
Thanks to Street Games a host of volunteers have made it to the World Cup in Brazil to deliver coaching sessions in the Favelas. Fifteen volunteers in total have travelled, four of whom are from Newport including Welsh international Futsal player Rico Zulkarnain. Rico, who plays Futsal for Cardiff University Futsal club in the FAW Elite Futsal league, will be working hard this summer as part of the trip to reach out to young people in the communities
Volunteer Simon Lu explains “We will be working alongside the city’s football teams to deliver coaching projects alongside several building projects throughout the city. We are holding significant talks with some major sponsors and are confident that the Brazil Legacy Tour will be able to replicate the success of South Africa 2010 on a bigger and bolder scale.
Huge community projects have already been scheduled, meetings with local politicians and dignitaries have taken place and the foundations are in place. We will take with us the simple aim of engaging with as many young people as possible, to ensure that the World Cup does not pass them by”.
In addition to undertaking this great work in the local communities the group will be able to attend four games at this summer’s World Cup. After touching down in Brazil over the weekend the group's first game was Iran v Nigeria. Rico commented "My first World Cup game in Brazil, I'm speechless"
