FAW Futsal National Champions, Wrexham Futsal Leading the Way

The growth of Futsal across Wales has been a positive stride in recent years as exemplified by the activities taking place in North East Wales and Wrexham in particular. Wrexham Futsal as a club was formed in 2011 and a local and regional futsal league was developed by several key volunteers to ensure additional playing opportunity within the region with support from former Wrexham Football Development Officer Mark Roberts and funding through the Community Chest of Sport Wales.

As the league has grown and continued to develop, so have the participants' ambitions and requirements. The league, which creates and nominates a regional representative side on an annual basis, lifted the FAW Futsal Cup in 2013 - the first team in North Wales to hold such an accolade. This led to the league's greatest achievement to date representing Wales in this season's UEFA Futsal Cup which was proudly staged in South Wales at Cardiff's House of Sport.

The club is currently half way through organising its fourth local male futsal league, which has seen a steady rise in participants and popularity and led to the expansion of the opportunities made available, developing with the league's first youth community programme delivered in August 2013 - a programme which continues to grow locally.

The expansion of the club has not only developed within the youth section. In October 2013 through many development opportunities locally and structured planning, Wrexham Futsal started its first ladies session - something which is proving extremely popular with local participants and led to the clubs first fixture in November 2013 when the ladies played their first game against a Liverpool County FA representative team.

The group has been attending futsal sessions with the club for about 10 weeks but this was the first time they took to the court as a team. Playing against a representative team from the Liverpool ladies league they were facing much more experienced opposition. The team led by head coach Marc Roberts held a good defensive shape early on and created some good opportunities but conceded two goals late in the first half. The second half followed the same pattern and despite their best efforts they conceded a further three goals late in the game as Liverpool ran out 5-0 winners. It was a great effort from the girls and they enjoyed their first game of futsal on a full court against strong opposition.

Local Club Development Officer Mark Roberts added "The league and club has had a strong positive effect on the local area and also a positive influence on the development of the game within Wrexham. Through much dedication and hard work the club is able to continue to grow and I am sure in coming months and weeks ahead it will have similar outcomes for the female section of the game"
