County in the Community Partnership with Torfaen Sport & WFT 2015-16

Newport County AFC believes that promoting our club across Gwent is fundamental to deliver the highest standard of football possible for years to come.

During 2015 officers from the Welsh Football Trust visited both the local authority Sports Dev departments and County in the Community. They brought with them a plan (Welsh Football Trust Regional Investment Plan) to work in partnership across the Gwent region and deliver opportunities through football to thousands of young people.

The work began in September 2015 and one of our most successful partnerships in the 5 authorities has been with Torfaen. We are currently delivering curricular & extra curricular sessions in 7 Torfaen primary schools with over 200 young people benefitting. We have 3 one hour sessions running every Tuesday evening from 4pm until 6pm at Cwmbran Stadium.

These sessions target female’s aged 7 to 16yrs and boys 11 to 16yrs and have been very successful with an average of over 20 participants attending each week. Working in partnership with Torfaen sports dev has allowed us to deliver 2 Primary School cup competitions and support 1 Primary School festival. We have also managed to deliver 2 High School Futsal competitions and 1 High School Girl’s Cup competition.

One of the highlights of the work carried out since September is the success of George Street Primary School Pontypool. They were the successful winners of the NCAFC Newport & Torfaen Schools cup in October and then went on to win the NCAFC Gwent Primary Schools Cup in November. George Street Primary will now represent Newport County AFC in Morcambe on March 7th and if they win that competition they will be playing at Wembley, Good Luck. The partnership is still in its infancy but we believe it will go from strength to strength in the coming months/years and continue to provide opportunities through football within Gwent.
