With words by Paul Thomas (Club Secretary)

We were formed in 1999 in one of the more disadvantaged areas of East Swansea, with just four under six players and two parents who still hold the positions of Secretary and Head Coach in 2013. The club now runs twelve teams from under five to under sixteen, inclusive of female teams playing within the West Wales Girls' League. We are fortunate to have thirty coaches (all FAW qualified) and fourteen parent reps to help at the club but we are always looking for new volunteers to come along and assist. All our coaches and parent reps are DBS checked and First Aid trained and many have attended the FAW Safeguarding Award. We have coaches from Football Leader Award and up to UEFA/FAW B Licence.

We have a community player development programme, where we encourage our older players to attend the FLA and then help with coaching with the younger players, thus keeping them away from anti-social behaviour and giving them a focus in the community. We are particularly proud of our recognition from the FAW and WFT with our Silver Award Accreditation and also our Regional Club of the Year Award through the Welsh Community Football Awards. We have also received a special award from the Swansea Junior League for our efforts to promote Club Accreditation and coach development.

Our partners include the local council and police (PACT Team) as we work towards offering disadvantaged youngsters the opportunity to use their energies positively through football experiences, and also the local McDonald's franchisee, who helps us with using the great facilities at Llandarcy. We work with local disability club Swansea Bravehearts with coaches helping out at the Bravehearts and also link in to our local schools to help promote the sport and hopefully recruit young players to the club.

As we strive towards further advancing the club, we have an all inclusive policy for the recruitment of players and coaches. Our future aims include working towards the Gold Award on the Club Accreditation Programme with the assistance of the Welsh Football Trust Club Development Officers and ensuring Talycopa FC continues to offer the local community a positive environment to be part of.

West Wales Women’s & Girls’ League and Pembrokeshire Women’s & Girls’ League

Both leagues have had a great start to the season organising U10’s, 12’s, 14’s and 16’s age groups with West Wales Women’s & Girls’ League running a Senior division (includes teams from Pembrokeshire). A combined total of 29 clubs serving Women’s & Girls’ football in West Wales.

The major focus within both leagues is the development of the U10’s age groups. The WWWG League has undergone structural changes this season to encourage growth at this age group. These changes include identifying a minis coordinator (Emily Hancock) and organising fixtures on a rotational basis around club sites during Sept, Oct, March and April and during November to January/February play indoors to ensure players get regular and consistent football. Pembrokeshire Women’s & Girls’ League operate on a similar basis and both leagues have seen a positive increase in participation levels and are aiming to organise an U8’s division in the near future. The Welsh Football Trust continues to support growth at this age group and the following clubs have been identified to receive support for season 13/14 – Rhos, Dafen, Tenby and Landore AFC.

Club support will commence in January/ February 2014 and it is anticipated that the named clubs will be gradually integrated into the relevant league structure. To find out more about this support mechanism do not hesitate to contact [email protected] or 07788 310406.
