BME Summer Football Festival

Providing Opportunities for all across Wales

Providing Opportunities for all across Wales

On Monday 19 August, over 100 Junior Black and Ethnic Minority players between 10-16 years of age participated in the ‘Summer Football Festival’ at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium. The Welsh Football Trust and Dynamic Sports Development delivered this festival to promote four Turn Up and Play centres which have been set up in high BME community areas of Cardiff. The centre will offer all children from BME and non-BME communities across Cardiff who don’t play mainstream football, an opportunity to take part in weekly football and be coached by qualified professionals.

The four areas where coaching sessions will be delivered on a weekly basis are Butetown, Grangetown, Riverside and Splott. The project is funded by Street Games who are effective partners for the Welsh Football Trust Inclusion Programme. The funding means that the centres will be free for children 10-16 years of age to attend, helping to break down financial barriers that limit children playing regular football.

All players who attended had a fantastic day playing mini football games, taking part in numerous coaching sessions and were presented with certificates and prizes.

Ali Abdi who is a youth worker in Cardiff and co-founder of the Dynamic Sports Development Voluntary Organisation said

‘This is a fantastic opportunity to get in touch with children from BME communities and promote our coaching classes which will be delivered weekly. A lot of these children love football but don’t have the opportunity to play on a regular basis or don’t know where they can play or be coached in a structured manner. I’m looking forward to working with the Welsh Football Trust coordinating coaching sessions in the four coaching hubs with the support of the volunteers from today and hopefully get more children attending each week as word gets around the community’.

The Welsh Football Trust would like to thank Dynamic Sports Development and all the volunteers involved in making this event successful and our best wishes go to the volunteers and coaches who will continue with this project in the near future.
